Kappa League was designed in the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter to help young men in high school to grow and to develop their leadership talents in every phase of human development. The areas of study included the following phases:
Brothers Mel Davis & Edgar Bishop presented the Kappa League Program at the 56th Grand Chapter Meeting in Charlotte, NC in 1970 for adoption by all chapters. It was, of course, highly approved, by the Grand Chapter.
Upon hearing about the proceedings of the Grand Chapter Meeting and the outstanding reports about the Guide Right Service Program, Congressman John V. Tunney of California arose on the floor of the House of Representatives and declared:
“Mr. Speaker, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity has undertaken a most laudable task in its Guide Right Service Program. Conceived in 1933, Guide Right is a year-round program for educational and occupational guidance of youths in high school and college. It is inspirational in character, as well as as a source of information for young men. Through Guide Right, Kappa Alpha Psi attempts to place the training, experience, and friendly interest of successful men at the disposal of young men who need inspiration and counsel regarding their choice of a life’s career, and to arouse the interest of the entire community in the problems of youth as they seek to lead useful lives.
To be more specific, the objectives of Guide Right are:
Helping youth, especially those of high school age, in the selection of courses leading to vocational compatibility with their attitudes and personalities.
Assisting students to get employment and progress successfully in their chosen vocations.
Assisting parents in counseling their children enrichment activities to give young people respite from the drudgery of the street.
Informing young people of the values of higher education, assistance available for educational pursuits, scholarships, loans, professional counseling and fellowships. They also discuss the various opportunities in vocations and professions, current labor demands and trends, and the personal, scholastic, and economic requirements for employment.”
The Congressman congratulated the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter for having started the Kappa League and the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity for having· adopted the idea as a national program. He described the activities of the Kappa League to the entire House of Representatives and concluded: "Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity is to be commended for efforts to help young men make the most of the opportunities available to them in our society".
The entire proceedings were printed in the Congressional Record.
So successful was this venture that the Kappa League idea has become the model for Guide Right activities in many chapters and provinces of the Fraternity.
Presently, the Kappa League/Guide Right Program is Los Angeles Alumni Chapter's major national community service project. Each spring, the yearly activities with the Kappa Leaguers culminate with a ceremony in which the public is invited and encouraged to attend.
Brother Alvin Hall, Esq. and Mel Bailey, II, members of Los Angeles Alumni Chapter, are former members of the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter Kappa League. Both brothers are contributing much to the success of our chapter.
1/15/24 | Today our Kappa League got to participate in the 39th Annual Kingdom Day Parade, the world’s largest and longest running life celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The Brothers walked alongside the Leaguers as they performed their high energy routine multiple times for all patrons and @abc7. They were interviewed during the route and stopped to perform for the judges and live camera crew. They were well-received by parade goers and represented Kappa League with pride!
